ワイアード誌によれば、カリフォルニア州立大学心理学部のニコラス・クリステンフェルド教授と大学院生のジョナサン・リービットさんは、大学生数10人を使ってネタバレの影響に関する実験を実施。チェーコフやロアルド・ダール、アガサ・クリスティー、レイモンド・カーバーらの12本の短編小説を題材に、何も知らされないままの状態と結末を知らされた状態での、読書における反応の違いを調査した。

結果は、何も知らされていない状態よりも、結末を知らされているほうが読書を楽しんだことが明らかになったという。原因については不明だが、結末を知っていたほうが読書により深く没頭できるからではないかとリービットさんは推察している。
